Match reports The Times, Matt Hughes: “Grant’s team continued their dogged pursuit of Manchester United and Arsenal with a ninth successive victory in all competitions that equals the club record. Michael Ballack’s first-half header was all that separated the teams on the scoresheet, although in terms of ability the gap was wider than the grandest of [...]
It’s not often you see the world’s all-time greatest footballer loitering down at Chelsea’s training ground (Andy Myers left before we moved there, after all). Argentine legend Diego Maradona popped in to see the boys at Cobham this week, possibly keeping an eye on new signing Franco Di Santo, the latest of Maradona’s countrymen [...]
Match reports The Independent, Conrad Leach: “It usually takes decades to build up an enmity on the scale that now exists between these two teams, but in their case it only took one match. That was last October, when Stephen Hunt accidentally collided with Petr Cech, his knee hitting the Chelsea goalkeeper in the head. It [...]
Did the earth move? Was the season lit with fireworks? Did Andriy Shevchenko seduce you with silky skills? Did Didier Drogba’s drive and dynamism send shivers down your spine? Did the essence of Michael Essien send you into a dreamy haze? Or did it seem like the interminable season from hell at times? Did you look [...]
Remember the good old days? Remember the two consecutive seasons that we actually went through Christmas unscathed? Maximum points anyone? Of course you do because they were the last two glorious years. Prior to these two glorious years, no matter who was at the reigns we would all rush headlong into the Christmas period blinded by [...]

Chelsea would never have dropped two points had their commanding centre-half, John Terry, been present and the captain’s imminent operation to shave a disc in his back cannot come soon enough. [...]
The second of Chelsea’s four games in ten days sees them take on Reading at Stamford Bridge. Serious injuries to Blues goalkeepers Petr Cech and Carlo Cudicini overshadowed the reverse fixture in October. Stephen Hunt’s challenge on Cech divided opinion but the majority felt that he could have avoided leaving Cech with a fractured skull. A hostile atmosphere [...]
The Football Association will look into complaints made by Chelsea following the Premiership game at Reading during which Petr Cech sustained a fractured skull. An FA spokesman said: “We have received a letter and will respond in due course to address their concerns.” A Premier League spokesman added: “We will ask Reading for their observations and the [...]
The Football Association have confirmed they will take no action against Stephen Hunt for the challenge which left Petr Cech with a fractured skull. The FA reached the same decision about Ibrahima Sonko’s challenge on Carlo Cudicini who was knocked unconscious later in the game. You can read the FA statement in full here.
Match reports The Observer, Amy Lawrence: “It was not just Reading who lost it. On the occasion when their 14-month unbeaten home record was put to the sword, Chelsea’s composure was rattled as John Obi Mikel was dismissed, Frank Lampard accused of diving and John Terry trod on thin ice with persistent dissent before completing the [...]
