Barclays Premier League, previously known as the English Premiership (or English Premier League) and abbreviated as the EPL, is roundly considered to be the strongest league in Europe. Having provided at least 3 English clubs to the final stages of the Champions League in the last few years, the Premier League has overtaken the other major European leagues. With the highest amount of TV revenue, transfer fees, and wages of any league in the world, the Premiership is a media enterprise unto itself. World famous clubs like
Arsenal FC,
Manchester United FC,
Liverpool FC and
Chelsea FC all play in this league, as do players like
Cristiano Ronaldo,
Steven Gerrard,
Cesc Fabregas and
Carlos Tevez.
Dominance of the "Big Four"
The Barclays Premier League has generally been dominated by 4 clubs – Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea, although Liverpool are yet to win a title. Since its inception in 1992, Manchester United have won 9 league titles including 2008, with Arsenal on 3, and Chelsea on 2. Blackburn Rovers were the only team to break this stranglehold, winning the league in 1995. The EPL has been criticised for not being as competitive as other leagues – such as Spain or France, where teams that aren't the biggest quite often mount title challenges and cause upsets. Manchester United faced Chelsea in June 2008 to beat them in both the European Champions League final, as well as the Premier League as the overall winner in points and goals.
