Champions League review: Liverpool 1 - 0 Chelsea (Agg: 1-1, Liverpool win 4-1 on pens)

Match reports

The Guardian, Kevin McCarra: “These sides grappled with one another so fiercely that it was as if neither would ever let the other go free to reach the final in Greece on May 23.”

The Times, Matt Dickinson: “The idea that his team might be rattled by the raucousness of a febrile occasion had seemed fanciful, but something made Chelsea unusually subdued in the first 30 minutes. They shook off that torpor – they had to – but only after Agger’s 22nd-minute goal had levelled the aggregate scores and created unbearable tension every time the ball went anywhere near a goalmouth.”

Daily Telegraph, Henry Winter: “Be careful what you wish for: Jose Mourinho had been moaning about never receiving penalties and his Chelsea team were put painfully on the spot at a crowing Anfield last night.”

The Independent, Sam Wallace: “Mourinho muttered in exasperation as he was asked again whether this defeat would affect his future at the club. But as Anfield exploded with joy at the expense of the Chelsea manager, again it was impossible to banish that thought. Ominously, Roman Abramovich was not in the stadium last night. It is impossible to read the thoughts of Chelsea’s silent owner but the trophy he craves most is now gone for a third Mourinho season.”

Official Chelsea FC Website, Neil Barnett: “Now there is the FA Cup Final left, and an outside hope of the Premiership. The Champions League remains the Holy Grail to be pursued another year.”

The good

  1. [Nick] Michael Essien. There are no superlatives left to describe him. It’s a shame his power and amazing fitness had to be deployed in a central defensive role. What could have been.
  2. [Nick] Claude Makelele. By far his best game this season. I’d offer him a two-year contract extension and keep him ticking over for games like this one.
  3. [Nick and Tony] John Obi Mikel. Composed beyond his years. If he’s this good now, what will he be like when he matures?
  4. [Nick] Paulo Ferreira deserves a mention. He showed us that he’s still a capable right-back.
  5. [Tony] The latter part of the game. Arjen Robben and Shaun Wright-Phillips seemed to add something and you have to wonder why we can’t take games to opponents like this all the time.
  6. [Nick] Petr Cech. In all honesty, he was the busier of the two keepers during normal time and he did brilliantly. It’s a shame he couldn’t be the hero after the season he’s had. However there’s still time…
  7. [Tony] The atmosphere. You have to hand it to the Scousers, their ground is a cauldron compared to Stamford Bridge.
  8. [Nick] The referee, Manuel Enrique Mejuto Gonzalez, played a blinder. Like Markus Merk in the first leg, officiated the game like it was a Premiership meeting.

The bad

  1. [Tony] The result. Obvious again, but this leaves us with the FA Cup and on this showing we will be ripped to shreds by a team full of belief and most likely already crowned Premiership champions.
  2. [Nick and Tony] The performance. Where was the “attack” policy that Jose Mourinho spoke of? We looked like frightened rabbits first half and for large parts of the second. We’ve lost the edge. The hunger. Liverpool had over 70% possession in the first half hour, and scored during that time. It was always going to be tough after that given our goal scoring record against them in the Champions League.
  3. [Nick] Joe Cole (whose poor tackling had me swearing at the TV) and Salomon Kalou’s performances were a tad disappointing. Perhaps our reliance on the long ball to Didier Drogba played its part in this, but when the two of them did get the ball they did very little with it. I would have introduced Wright-Phillips and Robben a lot earlier.
  4. [Nick] Does anyone else think that maybe we should have tried something different once it became apparent Drogba was being marked out of the game by Jamie Carragher et al? Maybe I’m just being harsh on a group of tired players.
  5. [Tony] The penalties. Frank Lampard’s aside, they were dreadful and I’m not blaming Robben, but his body language said it all. England may even have faired better.
  6. [Tony] The last week. One of the worst I can remember! At least since the bad old days of being relegated, but we always half expected that back then. It just shows our expectation levels these days. I know there are evangelistic fans out there ready to try and tell me that my lack of class shows my failure to support the team. Just go away huh? You have no idea of the pain I feel right now.

Tony’s player ratings

Cech - 6; Ferreira - 7; Terry - 6; Essien - 7.5; A. Cole - 4; Lampard - 7; Makelele - 6.5; Obi Mikel - 7.5; J. Cole - 5; Drogba - 6; Kalou - 5; Wright-Phillips - 6; Robben - 6; Geremi - 4.

Nick’s player ratings

Cech - 7; Ferreira - 7.5; Terry - 7; Essien - 8.5; A. Cole - 5; Lampard - 7; Makelele - 8; Obi Mikel - 7.5; J. Cole - 4; Drogba - 7; Kalou - 4; Wright-Phillips - 6; Robben - 6; Geremi - 6.

Man of the Match

Nick: Michael Essien. Tony: Vote in the comments.

Tony’s final thoughts

The “lean squad” experiment has truly failed and must not be repeated. For any team to try and win all four trophies you must have a squad of 26 minimum, but preferably 28. Tonight was a very bad night in our history, not least of all because we’ve already probably chucked our domestic title away. This was a real chance to take revenge for 2005, and we blew it. Worse still, we will never ever hear the end of it. I am dreading work tomorrow.

Next year both the Premiership and Champions League will be harder to win and maybe, just maybe we should look at Arsenal and see why they put out lesser teams for the domestic cups. As do Manchester United and Liverpool. The sick thing is that the last few weeks have seen a humongous effort amount to sod all. If Manchester United win on Saturday as expected then Mourinho must rest many players and play some kids for the remainder of the season in the hope that we get our best back for the FA Cup.

Then it’s time for big thinking in the close season. We need to have backup for the African contingent as the African Nations Cup coincides with crucial stages of the league and Champions League. We need to lose some of the baggage, including some big names and inject the team with hunger. It’s sad to say but two consecutive titles have taken the edge from the team and the Carling Cup victory over a side of kids is a very poor return on the money we’ve spent.

How the hell do I avoid the Scousers at work tomorrow?

Nick’s final thoughts

The words of Johann Cruyff quoted by Jonathan in this comment say what needs to be said at this time:

“Perfection, as I understand the term, does not mean that you have to win silverware. That’s the proof of your achievement but what matters above all is the fact that you are still alive in three competitions in April. And suppose you lose everything in May? It can happen, but it doesn’t change my respect for these teams one little bit. One bad month should never be allowed to obscure eight months of near impeccable performances from the point of view of collective effort.”

Indeed. Now is not the time for rash decisions. Mourinho has worked minor miracles this season; he has another League Cup to show for it, and soon we’re off to Wembley for an FA Cup final. Rest a few first team players between now and then, as Tony suggests, and there’s no reason why we can’t beat Manchester United. John Terry lifting the FA Cup above his head in the new Wembley stadium will more than ease the pain of this defeat.

And let’s not forget that we can still win the Premiership. Stranger things have happened - like Liverpool winning the Champions League from 3-0 down against one of Europe’s finest teams. It’s fated that they will meet AC Milan again on May 23rd.

I cannot understand Chelsea’s choice and order of penalty takers. Surely the manager half expected a penalty decider? What’s his strategy of leading with Robbin?? And then Geremi 3rd after Reina’s first save?? I’m no manager but I would have thought that the strategy would be to lead with your strongest penalty takers first to ensure your team gets the early goals and your goalkeeper has a chance to make a save.

Anyway just for discussion I would have chosen the following:
    1. Lamps
    2. Drogs
    3. Essien
    4. Terry
    5. Kalou

I chose JT coz he’s mentally tough and could step up and take his shot.

When a team finally goes out of a competition, it’s not a time to criticise them for their exit but to applaud their progress to that point. To only go out on penalties in the semi-final of the Champions League is the best result Chelsea have ever had in that competition. Last year was the worst result Chelsea have ever had in that competition. That’s a measure of progress. The results over Barcelona, Porto and Valencia, behind in then all and coming back were all fantastic. Next season we’ll be a top seed in the Champions League and will have a less arduous group to negotiate. That’s been our reward.

Feel bad? That’s just you feeling sorry for yourself again. I have no respect for that. Get a backbone.

    Hardiejt
To have a go at the order of penalty takers is pointless. It’s a lottery, always has been, always will be.

I will add if ever we needed Ballack fit last night and on the pitch, it was to take his penalty!

It’s the worse possible way to lose, and it hurts like hell!

Hats offf to Liverpool, I’ll be cheering them in Athens.

Dear JM, your only tactic is to hit it high to Drogba. Liverpool was the best team by far. As you’ll soon be leaving London I hope your destination is not Madrid, cause its my other team. Try HELL! The damage you did to Chelsea is irreparable. Soon people will realise how crap you’re.

Well After Newcastle I knew that we have done ourselves,

Its been the two pointer for chelsea whole season whether we won it or lose it or drew.

    1) No creativity
    2) Anti- Chelsea atmosphere from england fans, FA and referee…
and well there was a third too..
    3) No team except Barcelona and Arsenal have tried to play football against chelsea, rest all just defend and defend…giving no space to chelsea….thus no creativity again. when we had all our defender..we showed that its not gonna work, but when we lacked defensive prowess thrugh injuries…these team got away….so they knew how to crack chelsea…

The fall out of this season may be these guys….
    1) Shevchenko
    2) Robben
    3) SW Philips
    4) Lampard
    5) Ballack
    6) P Fierera
    7) Bhoularuz
    8) Geremi
    9) Makalele

If this happens looks like a huge buying summer….

…and if TSO goes 1 more

…and if RA leaves …… lets look for a new and different future….

Dont worry abt FA cup…doesnt look like we will win any match from now (only 4 left…atlast thanks God for the END of WAR (chelsea against world) as it has been going on since last 6 month for a fan like me and many other like me..)

I am very thankful to the team who gave us the believe of dreaming…whether fulfilled or not is as always a REALITY!!!!!

    2006-07 ENDS HERE!!!

Now I await for a Bollywood movie “Jhoom Barabar Jhoom” (means “Dance and dance” in english) to be released worldwide on June 15 as the lead actor in the movie is a chelsea fan….will have fun watching Stamford Bridge on big screen..watchout

Playing for 4 cups has taken its toll, but in my opinion, it looks like our draw with Bolton was a downer, and the players werent really motivated enough to win, it appears to me like they are thinking, “what can we do? we are doing our best”, If you see, they really are not realising their potential, the sharpness has worn out, not coz of lethargy but coz of the continous and rigorous use in the last few weeks,

Liverpoo, good luck for them!! they need to prove it against Manure, this “intellectua” coach of theirs..he makes me laugh, he is like a fat lady describing an accident or gossiping, not sour grapes, I am proud that we are/were here, with the run of bad luck going our way
“The most hurting thing is that Liverpool was not good at all. I mean in our best or even average form we could beat or draw them. But we were so awful that we lost to them.” you said it, we werent the best team today and STILL they couldnt beatA us, go figure. Rafa is NOTHING but an over rated FAT, BALDING “intellectual” manager!! He thinks he is some kind of a game player, we all know how good JM is at that, and more!
Accept that we were going to be caught, by the law of averages, by luck, by reality, anything, accept that we really lost the edge, and you will be at peace with yourselves rather than being bitter,

I am sure, People havent forgotten the triumphs and the joy JM gave all of us with absorbing the pressure off the players, he is a true leader with a wicked wicked sense of humor, which I feel you wouldnt understand or relate, after the game, did you watch JM & JT hug? They came to terms with it, sad but definitely with their heads high and already thinking about next. JM is definitely THE MAN, and I wud think that Roman would be foolish to let JM go, I wouldnt be surprised if JM leaves himself, for not delivering, I am sure following Chelsea and JM, You should be aware of the kind of person JM really is, my fear is that, and not that Roman would ask him to go.!!!To a large extent, the uncertainity of JM at Chelski courtesy of Roman,it had a lot to do with the frame of mind of the players.
“We lost to a team that has played two meaningful games in the last month. We tried to chase history and we came up short. Ask the players what they think of their manager. You can’t find a negative quote. “

    My complaints about yesterday’s game
1)Robben, he shud have come in earlier, he really has the capability of going wide and then cutting in, he did that once in the game, JM just had faith in Drogba and Kalou for too long in the game, he just should have gone for the kill, why he didnt go? I have no idea :(
2)Maka, he has been having a wavering season,He did have a good game(compared to the rest of the season only, definitely not so great by his standards). it really would have been great if JM planned in an aggressive mode, instead of defensive(just my feeling.

    The Good
1)Petr Cech–>Take a bow Cech, you did what you could, You were amazing and you are a great asset to our team, Thank you.
the penalties, I think poo went in with a lot of planning, they probably figured out(as the commentator said) that his left side being his weaker side, they put the penalties there, :( BAD LUCK.
2)Drogba, he is amazing, keep up the good work, it was great to see him motivating the rest of the team members, and actually doing it with action.
3)Essien, if only you had Ricardo……………………………………………… I am sure he would have taken a shot at the goal, he was everywhere, no doubt he is called The Tank :)!

JM, what is he gonna do to keep the guys motivated and fight for the FA cup??!!! It really comes down to THAT talk from the manager, which would just turn the team into a frenzied group of people.
Jose, man, you werent able to lift the guys yesterday do it for the rest of the season.Do SOMETHING!!!
Players… guys we all know how hated we are, for our success, they take comfort in the fact that its because of our money and the supposedly arrogant JM, they hate our straightforward talk, they hate our glee when we are happy, we celebrate in style and we make a statement, all Chelsea haters are haters because they want to be us!..

Keep the faith guys.. come on.

I agree with Joan Cruyff – nice quote!

If we won all 4 it wouldn’t be that great anyway because the rest of our lives would be a continual disappointment by comparison.

Overall the season hasn’t been too bad. We’ve had an interest in all competitions throughout the season. How many others can say that? And considering that we’ve played with 9 men throughout, whilst carrying Sheva and Ballack, it’s been an amazing performance by the core team.

My hope for next season is that 1)we spend more wisely this summer, 2) TSO, if he’s still with us, keeps mouth shut and 3) we play more attractive football.

Let’s hope Man U win tonight. If they’re in the CL final maybe they’ll not be able to give everything in the FA Cup Final and hopefully the Mancs and Scouser fans will destroy each other in Athens.

Robben was apparently inconsolable yesterday having played/lost with a still -painful knee.
‘Arjen came here to help the team. He was training two or three days with us and telling us you have no players, no attacking options, I want to help. Play me 10 or 20 minutes, whatever you need.
‘What can I say to a boy like him who is in the dressing room disappointed. He tried everything to help so I have to be proud of my players and share with them the difficult moment…
I havent seen a guy who can be such equilibrium with the ball.
What a team we’ve got here. Well done lads. Our great times will be back very soon!!!
    Up, up the Chels!!!!!!

You’re a twat. To feel sad and sorry is purely natural. I have been hard on the players by my ratings, but I would caveat this with the fact that they all, to some degree or another, looked knackered. It’s been a brave but heartbreaking season and all I’m saying is that next year maybe we should think about focussing on certain competitions like Arsenal, man utd and Liverpool (to a lesser degree have). If that means resting the top players for domestic cups until the latter stages, and even doing an Arsenal in the CC then so be it.

After 36 years my backbone is fine and will find itself back at Stamford Bridge next season “cheering them on through the sun and rain”. But for today I feel entitled to be down.

No. Ferguson used to do this with Wenger and got it back in full. Sometimes TSO steps over a line and that prick Simon Greenberg (Head of PR at CFC) could do more to temper some comments, but it is the Latin way to “tell it as it is” without the sugar coating we English would put on it.

I’d rather a rude winner, than a much loved loser (Ranieri).

if anyone noticed once he come on..there was always an opening…could be the tired scouse legs but i dunno. We’ve (TSO, the fans et al) been very unkind to a player of his calibre. I’ve beleived he should be having an iconic status here with his talent.

Since 1990 my life has moved from one penalty shoot out disaster to the next aproximately every 2 years.

Time is a great healer but this morning my mood can be described only as “painful”

For once David Pleat insightfully observed that Essien should have been played further forward as he was the one with the energy and it comes back to this small squad business. Having no-one trusted enough to deputise for our first choice center halves has cost us both the title and a place in Athens as - cpapble though Essien is at center half he is totally wasted. On another note I thought Kalou was pretty woefull last night, Cole was ineffective and Lampard annoymous.

    I give you all some Kipling which I tend to read at times like these - it helps me anyway;

We finally did lose to to the poo… Pity really that we were beaten a below average team (No sour grapes) but the display by Liverpoor was really not up to scratch. AN indication of how well we played.

I feel we missed Ballack in the middle, Carlvalho at the Back and a pressing Essien in the midfield.

Oh well… I am not so disappointed like the 2005 defeat, this time the goal was genuine and we were pressing against all odds.

We still have the Premiership and FA to press for so…

Let’s be honest, we did not attack enough and all season Essien, however good he is, has been played out of place all season and our midfield was not strong enough either to get the ball up or relieve the pressure on the back in many games. hey!, they got through on penalties and it was clear to see we were the only ones trying to win in open play. Would’nt it be great if Milan knocked out both and we win the FA and maybe just pip the Prem? Can you imagine the red face on Benitez and Man-U and their board and supporters? Since they dont support us in Europe, I am firmly with Milan and who knows, we could still have a silver lining….Let’s hope!

The team along with their fans want the Premiership title more than anything else.

So to all you Liverpool supporters that read comments on this blog….

You can win all cup competitions with a penalty shootout, but you can’t and never will win the title the same way.

Spot-on Clive! I am feeling so angry today. What is going on with Cheva? He was supposed to be resting in London, but he was in the stands?! And Ballack - what a time to take yourself off to Germany! We pay £260,000 a week for those two, and when we really need them, ie for penalty kicks, they let us down. I bloody knew it would go to penalties as well - just had that written all over it!
I feel the team played as hard as they could, but they’re knackered. Please, lets have a slightly bigger squad next season, and do an Arsenal with the Carling Cup.

I thought my pain might have lessened a bit this morning but no. I saw my first game at the Bridge in 1965 and this has been the hardest defeat to swallow ever. Worse than any of those FA Cup semi defeats we used to regularly suffer. Worse than 67 …….. I can recall no game that is worse than this.
But then I read Giles Smith’s piece on the link by Jimbo and it made me feel better because by Christ, he hit the nail on the head.
No other team could have sustained the injuries we have had this season and on the 1st day of May still be in contention for so much.

Oh well…My real complaint though is that why oh why do we keep letting Frank Lampard take our set pieces, he is awful! Been woeful with it all season. Their high, with no whip or pace to them. And seconds Drogba can’t do it all all night. He was winning the flick ons but to who???

Well it’s not all about you. 28-man squads won’t do it. By definition, the extra 5 won’t be as good as the first 23 and what will they do for the majority of the season? Be miserable somewhere else. Squiddy - read what i said. 36 years I’ve supported them and that’s how I feel. Don’t tell me to smile and put the brave face on coz there ain’t one available today.

A 26 man squad would have provided more depth and injury cover than a bloody 20 man squad, how can you not see that?

Read some of the reviews, they’re nothing if not honest representations of what I feel, and sometimes others agree. Sometimes they don’t , but they usually spout a better argument than your psychobabble bollocks about self serving garbage. How should I feel? Happy. Smiley, Shiny? Well I don’t. To quote a well known Stones song

“I see a red door and I want to paint it black, no colours anymore I went them all turned black”.

Give me a week and the half empty glass will be half full again, but stop telling me I’m wrong in how i feel..

Also, why not play Bouhla and leave Ess in midfield? If it isn’t working then change it around, but to keep playing Ess out of position when you have a capable centre back available is pig headed stubbornness gone mad.

It is a heartbreaking and painful match to watch, particularly, from Asia where we catch the match from 2-5 am.

No matter what, from watching the match, my support to the manager Jose Mourinho remains the same. He has made the best substitutions based on the number of existing players he has. It is unlucky for Chelsea to lose on penalties, and we should not fault the manager for that.

In any case, stay strong and win the FA Cup.

It’s so arrogant of Moaninho to comment on Chelsea being the better team last night. Yeah, it was a tight game I feel but Liverpool had more passion on their side…. and the comment about just playing for penalties?? Get a life Moaninho!!! Kuyt hit the bar for God sake… or was he ‘paid’ off to seem like he wanted to attack…. so as to just hit the bar! And a goal disallowed?? I think no. Thank God for sweet justice. Chelsea players… all are great players but u gotta have passion! Good luck to Liverpool. Good night Chelsea fan.!

A 26-man squad provides only an extra 6 players at the bottom of the list. Only 11 play. You want to take the chance that those extra 6 will coincide with injuries and suspensions? They didn’t this year. We had a bigger squad a few years ago and several weren’t happy. We tried that.

That’s how you feel? I know. Suck it up. Adopt the loser mentality at Arse? Why not! Like that’ll help anything. A humongous effort amounted to sod all? This isn’t a one-year project. 36 years and still half-soaked. It’s not the brave face that bugs me - it’s the throwing everything in the air as if it was nothing.

    Totally gutted…..but

Actually I agree with JM we were the better team but those guys just looked tired tired tired.

You know, if we’d blown the EPL sooner we might just have won it last night cos the team would have been fresher.

We still have the FA Cup to look forward to although we are not favourites in my view - but you never know!

Longer term I agree we need a bigger squad and JM needs to have the balls to bring more of the kids into the first team - if he’s still at Chelsea next season!

Personally I think the team has made a lot of progress this season and I would not be in favour of wholsesale changes. Give some of the youngsters a chance and for ****s sake give Lampard a rest. He’s been poor this season (by his standards) because he plays too much.

I thought he relinquished possession in the midfield too easily on several occasions. I agree with Tony, some depth was what this team needed tonight. It was heartening to seen an injured Sheva make the trip on his own money to watch his club play. I would have loved to have had him available as Drogba gets many more chances when Shev is about. Such is life. There is, and will always be, next year.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I think there has been a host of recurring themes in our season that has not been addressed. After a season filled with apathy, my diet and health have taken a turn for the worse, we need to regroup and attack next season with vigor. In short, here are a few:

    1) While we should give adequate praise to TSO and the players for having the gall to go after 4 trophies, I think we should be more strategic in the future. Not every trophy carries weight no mutter how much brass or gold is engraved on it. I for one could care less about the Carling Cup. Priority should be given to two trophies, Champions League and the Premier League. The rest are a nice-to have not need to have.

    2) Our general style of play. We have gotten away for so long without playing horrible football for a long time, and in particular, this season by relying on exceptional moments from either Drogba or Lampard. We need the burden of goal scoring to be shared much more evenly. God forbid either of these two get long-term injuries. This problem stems from the middle of the park.

    3) Lampard and Ballack. This touches on part 2. I have been told otherwise, at least theoretically, but these players are virtually identical and bring no added value to the midfield by playing them both at the same time, never mind their extraordinary wage bill. From England and this season at Chelsea, it is quite clear that two identical players can not play at the same time. As with Tottenham, Zokora and Davids could not play together. Yes, I know, Lampard scores 20 plus goals a season and a midfielder like that is priceless. Yes, but a player like that, is exceptionally greedy and creates an imbalance in the team. There have been numerous times this season where Shevchenko or Drogba was open and he tried to take a shot. Until he does what a midfielder is truly supposed to do (pass, create space, and opportunities for strikers) we will always have a sterile striking pair. (I will ignore the fact that TSO should have relegated Lampard to the bench along time ago, this season he seems to just don the blue shirt to see just how far he can shoot the ball into the stand from dead ball situations).

    4) Essien. My God is he human? This guy is 8 (midfield, defense) players in one. Having seen him play for Ghana numerous times since his U-17 days, I say Chelsea are not getting the best of him. For him to truly excel, put in the damn midfield with a “free” role. And for God sake, I think it truly an insult to perhaps the best overall midfielder in the world to be playing for almost half the season as CB. We are losing at least 3 players from such stupid behavior.

    5) The wingers. I have noticed that many of the fans adore Robben, and J.Cole, and to a lesser extent SWP. Trust me, these guys are bit players that can never play more than 30 minute a game. And Robben, the least said the better. I will cut my legs off the day he can play 5 straight games.

    6) Depth of the squad. Does Chelsea have too few players? No, of course not! We just happen to have too many mid-field players. We are better of letting some midfielders go and buying one proven and experienced CB and RB. Also, we need one more upfront striker. Guys that can put the ball down on the ground and let rip a thunderbolt.

    7) Carvalho. Take a bow. He vindicated what I have always seen. Him, not JT (God bless his heart) is the center piece for our defense.

PS. There was a comment here that really rubbed me the wrong way and ticks me off big time. Regarding the helicopter crash, the guy (Mark) that said, “if it is not a fan, we don’t care” is a complete ass. How the hell can you say something like that when someone has died. This is “blue” gone too far and stupidity and shocking apathy setting in. And by the way, it appears that he was a fan.

To Aklasu: do you mean we need to get new wingers and let go Robben and/or Cole? this seems a bit harsh don’t you think? the guys had the football curse that’s called injury for God sake. As for the other points I agree with you 100% but I wouldn’t call playing Essie in CB stupidity, it just that there was no other option, that’s why we definitely need to enlarge the squad in the summer.

Sympathy to all that were on the helicopter and to their families.

The way we have been playing, we don’t deserve to have come this far. We’ve been relying on a few players all season, and we play worse football than average premiership sides.
The Biggest Chunk of Mourinho’s gameplan is Didier Drogba. Wait for him to do everything… win the headers, win the freekicks, score the goals, create the goals, defend in the box, win the knockdowns from his own headers even….
If it wasn’t for Drogba having such an outstanding season, this Bigheaded, deluded prat Mourinho would be sacked by now.
We have all the money in the world, some bloody good players but we still play like trash.
Just look how Milan passed and created space last night.- and they didn’t play with any wingers either.
I was hoping Mourinho could win a major trophy this season, keep things sweet for us, Abramovic and for himself , and then fuck off to spain or wherever. It looks like he can do that without winning a trophy now.
The Quad? Our performances don’t warrent winning any trophies this season. Jose Mourinho’s antics and his style of play are an embarrament to Chelsea and England. Can you imagine what the rest of the world think when they see us play? longball merchants, who constantly drop to the ground looking for freekicks at the slightest contact.
Sure we get kicked about sometimes, but NO ONE make such a big fuss out of evrey tackle the way our lot do.

I’m crazy about Chelsea but while watching that game against the Red Scum, the truth is I realized more perfectly than I had ever before, just how pathetic our attacking play is.
We’ve got quality players so WHY do we have to play so shitevery game?
Yeah, most of the players give everything, but it’s all about stopping other teams with us.
We should be able to RIP TEAMS APART.
When was the last time we actually looked like CHAMPIONS in a match.
It’s like the players have no ideas when they’re down there…
With what we have, we should be champions and PLAY LIKE CHAMPIONS!

“Just look how Milan passed and created space last night”

You havent seen AC Milan in the domestic league. well, i have.
simply, they were playing a team on their last legs, just like ourselves. in the first leg they (MU) were gifted 2 goals by the keeper and that put the ash under the carpet.
Simple truth is: its may, ACM have about 20 competitive games between all the competitions, MU have 40. that DOES make a difference. same between pool and chels.
now i hear about passion…..PASSION? you call passion resting the whole first team for a PL game? i call it a bloody shame, i call it lack of respect for (your own) supporters. what passion

“we should be able to rip teams apart”: do you know any team who gets to rip apart the opposition game in game out? you may manage to rip apart your opposition ten times in a season. what kind of football do you watch? even Brasil ‘70 had trouble ripping apart.
if we played the way we played it is because WE HAD NO OTHER CHANCE.
i’m proud of each and every player, whatever the achievement this year. and pride grows stronger each day

    yours in blue

    Evening all,

this is to Tone and Clive, while nobody is suspecting your loyalty as CFC fans I do think Cashif has some point, not in sacking TSO, but in the way we played so far … how many times did win or score 3 or 4 goals a game? and how many did Manure ?

I am pretty sure it was because of injurys, however, not every game should be won thanks to Deadly Drogba, what kind of tactics this is?

This was clear against Looserpool wasn’t it?

Sacking JM is NOT the solution, we all saw what he is really about the last couple of seasons, we just need to enlarge the squad SO BAD.
Cashif, please look back to our away game against Valencia, and you will see what a great tactician JM is.

    Always Blue.

This romantic notion that we should be ripping teams apart is unrealistic.

We’ve been champions for the past two seasons, teams are up for it when they play us because they want to make it difficult. They hustle and close the space down very quickly, there’s a reason why we’ve scored so many late goals in the last 10 mins of games.

The opposition are pretty knackered by then with all the effort they’s put in to stop us playing. So credit to us for plugging away and not giving in, that’s passion and spirit that we have in abundance.

Of course I’d like to see us rip teams apart, and be 3 or 4 nil up by half time, but it’s not going to happen the vast majority of the time.

As records have shown it’s very difficult to win three titles in succession, and if we do it, it’ll be an amazing achievement.

If Manure win it this year they will find most teams will be in their faces next year and they won’t get such an easy ride.

And just a note on the so called long ball tactics we play. Looking at the stats out of the top 4 teams only Arsenal have played less long passes than us according to the Sky Sports web site.

All season we have had to hear the taunts about a Utd league victory being a victory for football. Well I’ll be supporting Milan in Athens since a victory for them will truly be a victory for football. In reaching the final Liverpool have achieved something very special - namely making our play look expansive and exciting. Benitez has produced a team that has had a charisma bypass - I am annoyed, though not shocked , that the press have made so little of it as if we had gone through playing such negative football we’d have never heard the end of it.

    Forza Milan!!!

    Clive,
I totally agree that teams want to give us hard games, but do you think they will wait until Manure wins the league then starting (next year) to close spaces and hustle around?!

Let’s admit it, Manure played a good season and teams tried hard to come up with a good result against them but still they scored A LOT.

As for the stats, this is some new info for me and I thank you for it :) but how about SHORT passes, are we doing a good job lately?

Anyway, I think we have to wait for the summer window and see what our special one will do there.

    Always Blue.

    Cashif does have point.

Ultimately Jose manages the team, so should be able to pick and play the most in form players and a formation to match that.

Lamps has been terrible this season, OK lots of goals previously, but through greed. As he’s playing terrible he and us are missing these goals. If he just played the ball to the strikers…..

Ballack would have been much better then Lamps in the centre mid role, with ‘the bison’.

Obviously injurries had a HUGE hand to play in the new year. If ‘the canabal’ and Ferrera aren’t good enough to fill in for injurred players, then they must leave. And if they are in good enough shape and form then what in tarnations was Jose thinking of with Essien and Diarra in the back line.

Altough they do reasonably well, they’re then not in their most effective possitions.

AND make no mistake about it, if all our players are fit (and Lamps is dropped) we’ll have a great squad.

The long ball thing is so f’ing annoying. I hate to see it so often in our play, it’s alot easier to control the ball with your feet. And we need to get back to wing play.

If you want to talk about thrashing teams we need wing play. Not a narrow midfield. Look at united this season, look at our first TSO season. WINGERS PEOPLE, there the future……

We need a CB, RB, FW and a winger in the close season.

I’m actually getting peed off at all the talk of how great a manager Jaffa Cake is.

I suppose it is great if you only want to ever win one competition. I’d like to meet a thief, oh excuse me a liverpoo fan who is completely comfortable with this.

    I know i bloody wouldn’t be!!!

Maybe they should drop out of the prem, FA cup and Leauge cup next season. Then they can focus much better on the CL.

Come on AC, make them go home with nothing. Lets see how much praise jaffa Cake gets then….

Clive, excellent post, totally agree, it’s good to see that most blues are now moving on from the disappointment of going out in a lottery and are seeing bigger pictures - personally I prefer a golden goal option where the teams just keep playing, after 3 hours you’d see motivation, stamina and mental strength as much as silky skills and tactical direction win the day.

Tone, more good points that I totally agree with, I beginning to think that these scousers that bleat on about ‘passion’ don’t realise it’s become a glib marketing phrase for the redskins, how else can anybody believe that theirs is the *only* team that has this quality.

Also with the bigger picture that appears as you emerge from the disappointment is that whatever finally happens this year, next year will yield at least as much if not more, and so will the year after and the year after… ‘History’ is the other word that has been overused to define the status of clubs and although it’s frustrating that we get pilloried by most of the media, including the broadsheets who disappoint just as much as the tabloids with their snide thinly concealed allegiances, I honestly think in years to come as the trophies mount, this club will be seen in a truer light and the respect will emerge for what has been achieved. It’s natural to intially have that kind of rabid envy we have been subject to mainly for two reasons, we’re the new kids on the block, and Roman’s support, Jose is also such a strong character that he polarises people, they love or hate him, I think that’s why he and Fergie get on, and I couldn’t imagine Whinger or the Fat Controller having the dignity to arrange a guard of honour at their grounds, oh, and that’s the final word that’s been bandied around, ‘class’, another thing, like premierships, that can’t be bought. Especially by throwing pizza at your opponents =)

    COME ON YOU BLOOOOOOOOOZ !

Saw on Sky Sports that Sheva might feature against Arsenal.

Featuring in a game will be a first!

    Ahhahahaha..
    from the club site..
“MGN Limited, the owners of the Daily Mirror, now accepted that the allegations were untrue, apologised and agreed to pay substantial undisclosed damages and Shevchenko’s costs.” Sheva doesn’t need the money and they’ll write it off as a tax loss but it’s the PRINCIPLE.. now, what was it I was just saying about class? Hope next year is better for Sheva btw, many feel Drogs and Essien improved in their second years here coming from outside the prem, I know he may not have the pace but he does have strengths and qualities that maybe next year’s squad/formation will utilise better.

Do you know why did you loose? Because your team is tired(just watch Lampard playing), full of injuries and because Chelsea’s stupid boss(Roman) didn’t allow JM to buy players in January!Even so TSO managed to reach the semis, the cup final and you can still be champions, so he’s a fu******genious!!Oh and off corse, Benitez built a team wich is tactically almost as good as Chelsea….the fresh legs made the rest of the job.I think Chelsea can do it next year…..only if you keep TSO!!

    PORTUGAL ALLEZ!!!

p.s:you have to admit that chelsea’s football is annoying an boring….but guess what!!..so is the liverpool’s!

    Chelsea Beef,

You’re right about the wingers I reckon. But d’you remember at one stage LAST SEASON when Crespo and Superdrog were both playing up front.
It was s till a 4-4-2 without wingers but my point is he chnaged things because we were having problems with our 4-3-2-1 with the widemen and one up top.
That worked the firsts eason but he chnaged it a bit the second year cos we were being found out by teams.
I’m no magaer and I shouldn’t really be talking about systems, but I just can’t help thinking ‘why don’t we ever start a game with 2 wingers and 2 forwards on the pitch from the beginning…
Now Somone’ll probably say JM likes to keep a little extra up his sleeves…
