John Terry named England captain

John Terry has been named England captain by Steve McClaren. The Chelsea skipper replaces David Beckham who stepped down from the role after this summer’s World Cup. His first game as captain will be the friendly against Euro 2004 winners Greece on August 16.

A good decision by Steve McClaren - and I don’t say that as a Chelsea fan. I personally think Steven Gerrard lacks that “something” - charisma? - to lead his country. And anything that upsets Liverpool fans is a good thing in my book. ;-)

JT’s come a long way in recent times. It’s a joy to see.

Great news. Thoroughly deserved. Minute’s silence from the Grievers on Sunday then?

    This is fantastic.

We need a good chant for Sunday to wind up the mickey-mousers.

im personally thrilled to see terry as captain, i think it will bring out the best in him, but to say gerrard lacks something is a bit harsh, in my humble opinion.

stevie g has shown time and time again what a inspirational leader he is and i think if he had been made captain of england then he would have really stepped up on the international scene and maybe given england that something that they have lacked for a long time.

a thoroughly tough decision to make. as a chelsea fan its a great accolade for terry, but i wouldn’t have been bitter if stevie had of recieved it.

how much higher can that blue flag go?

JT is one of the most natural born true leaders in international football today. Even if you don’t know much about him you instantly know he is leadership material. It is a step in the right direction for England and a good start in the new McLaren era.

As for Gerrard, he has never played even half as good when he has put on an England shirt (compared to when he puts on that red shite t-shirt) and it would have been laughable to appoint him as the skipper of England. I think he is not good enough to be even JT’s deputy and Neville, Ferdinand or Owen should be the vice captain of England.

Congratulations JT! There is definitely only one JT!

McClaren is definitely winning me over: JT as captain, Venables as his assistant, and David Beckham dropped. Let’s just hope the negativity McClaren showed as Boro boss is dropped too.
