Frank Lampard has been named on the three-man shortlist for FIFA’s World Player of the Year award, along with Barcelona’s Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto’o. On Monday Lampard, the footballer of the year in England last season, lost out to Ronaldinho for the Ballon d’Or, the European Footballer of the Year award. Unlike the Ballon d’Or, which is [...]
Following the death of one of football’s most enduring characters last Friday, the most refreshing aspect of the weekend’s fixtures was how football found its own voice and identity in the way that it celebrated the on-pitch life of one of the game’s greats. Aside of the games at the New Den and the [...]
The Premier League has launched an investigation into claims by former player Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink that players received unauthorised cash bonuses. Hasselbaink says Blues players received £100,000 for reaching the Champions League last four in 2003/04 rather than the £50,000 written into their deals. The Premier League says it’s “duty bound” to investigate the claims. A Premier League [...]
I’ll start with the sad but not unexpected death of George Best. I don’t have any memories of him in his pomp (I was born a few years too late to witness his peak form at Manchester United) but I developed an affection for him over the years, just as many of my generation did. [...]
After our defeat to Real Betis it’s imperative we beat Anderlecht. Contrary to Jose Mourinho’s claim yesterday, a win will not be enough to qualify for the knockout stages unless Liverpool beat or draw against Betis at Anfield. We currently lie second in Group G, three points behind Liverpool and one ahead of Betis. Nineteen players [...]
Apologies for the weak pun but the temptation to indulge in Bond-style headlines has been too great given recent events; with Special Agent Jose already annoying the nation’s non-Chelsea contingent by leaping across rooftops and staring down from billboards with his Samsung mobile that doubles as a plastic explosives detonator and radar jamming device (probably), [...]
Chelsea have reached an agreement with OFK Belgrade to sign 16-year-old centre-half Slobodan Rajkovic. The deal is said to be worth £3.5m — a world record for a player under 18 years of age. “OFK and Chelsea have reached an agreement for Rajkovic,” said Belgrade general director Vladimir Bulatovic. “He will stay with us until the end [...]
The last two weeks have passed by at a pace akin to Sami Hyypia in full flight. We’ve had to endure the deluded gloating of United fans, tabloid tales of player infidelity, a number of daft transfer rumours and reports of Roman Abramovich’s ‘henchmen’ meddling in team affairs. (The latter so annoyed Jose Mourinho that [...]
The tedium of the international break was worth enduring given what England served up last Saturday evening. Somehow I doubt they’ll produce another display to match that one anytime soon. (I’m an eternal cynic when it comes to a Sven-Goran Eriksson managed England team.) Apologies for the lack of updates recently; I took the opportunity to… [...]
There is nothing worse than a rude awakening. There I was, quietly browsing the morning papers with both tabloids and broadsheets declaring that despite the pervading sense of doom and gloom they had hysterically constructed — sorry, reported upon in a sensible and unbiased manner, the clouds had finally lifted and the sun was [...]
