Gilardino bid imminent?

The Sun newspaper, source of many an outrageous transfer rumour, carries a report in today’s issue claiming that Chelsea is on the brink of making a £35m bid for Parma striker Alberto Gilardino.

Apparently The Blues hope to tie up the deal once the debt-riddled Italian club is sold today.

A Parma source said: “The club could well be sold with all its assets within 24 hours. Only then can Gilardino’s destination be decided.

“The fact there is a £35m bid in place for Gilardino has put an official price on to the club’s biggest asset.

“If the sale goes through as expected, Chelsea’s bid will be passed to the new owners for immediate consideration.”?

Michael Owen for £15m or Gilardino for £35m? Hmm… one proven in the Premiership, the other possibly another Mutu or Crespo. I know where my money would go.

As you pointed out here, Real are just inviting bids for Owen by claiming “[He] is not for sale because he is part of Vanderlei Luxemburgo’s plans.” Utter nonsense; they’re just driving up his transfer value.

Who would you have: Owen or Gilardino? My vote goes to Owen.

Owen is too small ‘Webmaster’. Don’t want him here!

Gilardino over Owen anyday, Owen mite b proven in EPL but he’s not proven for one striker policy of JM for which Gilardino is suitable. And as far as quality is concerned banging goals left and right for two successive seasons in the best defensive league playing with a team in dire straits shld be a gud enough reason to indicate his quality.
Gilardino anyday over the likes of Owen and Trezeguet and we shld buy him unless we r getting Adriano or Eto.

Owen, why try another unproven striker when you can pick up a proven one for a lot cheaper? Personally I feel our striker for this up-coming season has been sold and is playing for another premiership club. I’m talking about Mikael Forssell he was scoring for both club and country before he got injured and we finally get the chance to have him play for us and what do we do? We sell him.

It’s a tough one. Is Gilardino - if all these rumours are to be believed - worth more than 2x Owen’s transfer fee?

I don’t know a lot about Gilardino, only from what I read on the net, but I’ve seen Owen play hundreds of times and seen him score countless goals, and he’s obviously a ‘natural’ goalscorer, although susceptible to hamstring injury if my memory serves me correctly.

I don’t agree that Owen’s too small either. We’ve already got one - two if you include Eidur - bruising center-forward in Drogba - wouldn’t it be good to have a forward who is completely different in style? Maybe he doesn’t firt into Jose’s preferred 4-3-3 formation, but he’ll always score goals.

Oh, and I agree with Genyz - we’ve sold a quality striker in Forssell. Silly move if you ask me. But I suppose Jose knows best!

It doesn’t matter if Owen costs half as much as Gilardino. When your funds are unlimited you go after the best player possible. Owen simpy does not fit into our 4-3-3. As for Gilardino being unproven, that’s absurd. No one, not Adriano or Sheva, has scored more goals than Gilardino over the past two Serie A seasons. Forsell, meanwhile, has really only had one great year and was also coming off a major injury. You can’t hand a player like that a starting assignment, and I think he wouldn’t have been comfortable in a back-up role. Really, just because you aren’t familiar with a player doesn’t mean he’s not worth signing.

Having viewed the videos linked to by TheFlyingDutchMan above I think Gilardino is a darn good striker. But I made the mistake of getting excited by Kezman last summer after viewing a video of his goals for PSV, some of which were brilliant. The thing in Gilardino’s favour is that he’s scoring goals in Italy’s top flight and not Holland’s. However the Premiership is completely different to Serie A, as is London and English culture. Will Gilardino adapt and be happy to play in London? From the news reports I’ve read, it seems not.

i would prefer Gilardino over Owen… but at the same time i also hope Mr.Kenyon and Mr.Mourinho noticed Santana and Tevez during Confederations Cup.. Those two are young talents who can fit in to Chelsea’s team, both as team players, playmakers and goalgetters..

So for the shopping spree: Midfield: Santana or Jaquin, Attack: Gilardino or Tevez..

I think if we were serious about winng the CL and PL this season we’d probably need both Gilardino and Owen.

I think I can remember that Mutu also scored a couple of goals in Italys top flight…

Gilardino, Owen, Eto’o, Shevchenko and TREZEGUET???????? Never rated the man. He’s not £35m. I don’t agree with Forssell being the finished article, but I’d rather him than Trez.
Don’t get me wrong, Jose does know what he’s doing but he’s not exactly a genius when it comes to buying in talent.
Tiago? Carvalho for £20m? Ferriera for £13m? Kezman??? Drogba for £24m??? Jarosik?
However I’m liking the signing of Del Horno. Just add Essien and one of the other strikers show above and I would fancy a clean swept of trophies.

Mourinho said he wants to bring in at least 3 players. We’ve got Del Horno, but the main thing, obviously, is to land a top striker. I looked at FlyingDutchmens link of Gilardino’s play and he will fit right in there. To say the least, he will be better than Drogba because even though Drogba was good at Marseille before coming to us in the French league, Gilardino has scored countless goals in the most defensive league in Europe, so if he can rip open defences in Serie A, he will be class here in England! We need him! Owen will be a flop- he may score goals but he will not be as good as Gilardino!

yes, but didn’t Mutu score goals for fun in Serie A too?

  16. Unread comment 16. TheFlyingDutchMan · 6:32 PM · 1st July

I thought Mutu was quite good at the start of his first season, he had 5 goals in 5 but then he collasped, and didn’t socore ages, but seeing Gilardino’s goals i think he could be the answer to our current striker problem. Though i don’t know if hes worth 35M.

I’d like to start the Christian Vieri rumour — acknowledged anglophile and acceptable, short-term third or fourth striker. On a Bosman too!

Out of shape, morose, prone to more tantrums than Sir Elton and, crucially, is probably past it. The Guardian. Newcastle and Spurs are chasing him - apparently he wants a move to Spain.

I personally feel that Drogba will be a stronger player this season (barring injury) and that he and Eidur will start to develop a greater understanding of each other’s play. I’m not denying the need for an additional striker but I think Chelsea’s greatest problem is the lack of time given for strikers to form decent partnerships.

basically, the best striker to fit into our system would be Adriano. anyone seen him in the confederations cup? OUTSTANDING! failing that though, as eto’o has signed a new contract and shevas not for sale, Gilardino seems the best option. Owen hasnt had the practice and he isnt strong enough. The front line of duff, robben and owen wouldnt be able to handle the physical nature of the premiership. Adriano would thrive on it (especially with the service from robben and duff). Having said this, i agree with ‘g’ as i feel drogba will get better, and hes big and strong. everyone seems to have written him off too quickly. maybe we should wait untill the jan window as we have goals aplenty coming from duff, robben, lampard, gudjonsen and even terry.

Ok, I really really do hope chelsea get alberto gilardino. The guy’s a class act. Adriano would have been first choice, but ther’es also many strikers if chelsea don’t get gilardino, namely
    valeri bojinov
    david villa
    carlos tevez
    fernando torres
CHELSEA NEED CILARDINO but he’s set for Milan
