Shaun Wright-Phillips to Stamford Bridge?

During what is likely to be a very quiet Easter for Chelsea FC news, we’ll instead focus on some of the more ’sensationalist’ stories published this weekend. We start with a Daily Mirror ‘exclusive’: Jose Mourinho has won the race to sign Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Jose Mourinho has delivered another shattering transfer blow to bitter managerial rival Arsene Wenger by winning the race to sign England’s rising star Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Chelsea boss Mourinho has sewn up a £20million deal with Manchester City and the Arsenal manager has privately accepted the player is heading for west London instead of north London even though Wright-Phillips was his top transfer target this summer.

Wenger believed they had a strong chance of landing Wright-Phillips because of his adopted father Ian Wright’s Highbury connections, and was hoping the England prospect would be the biggest signing of his summer rebuilding plans.

Mourinho and chief executive Peter Kenyon are chasing at least three big-name signings this summer and Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard’s impending move to Stamford Bridge is the worst kept secret in English football.

But Mourinho also wants back-up for wingers Arjen Robben and Damien Duff and, although Joe Cole has been an excellent stand-in, Chelsea want some natural width and that is why they have gone for Wright-Phillips.

Mourinho also wants a new left-back and after the Ashley Cole “tapping-up” row, he has turned his attention to Juventus’ £15m-rated Gianluca Zambrotta.

Digest that with your morning coffee.

I think SWP’s a great player – but do we really need him? I suppose, given Mourinho’s desire to have two world class players per position, we do. Wouldn’t place a great deal of trust in this story though! ;-)

At this rate we’re going to have the majority of the England squad playing for us next season: Lampard, J. Cole, Terry, Bridge plus new additions Gerrard, Wright-Phillips and A. Cole. Nice!

I think SWP, behind wayne rooney is one of the best english prospects. He is easily one of the top 5 wingers in the premiership, and being that he is still quite young, only being 23, he will only get better. Being that duff and robben are both left footed wingers, shauns naturally a right footed winger which will aid him in his aim of getting a first team place. I feel this is a great singing coming from a true chelsea boy, and wright phillips will make his mark in a chelsea shirt…its only a matter of time now! If he could lead and do it at a club with the players he had around im at mancity, with the players around him at chelsea….it jus frightens me……

Its in the genes as his brother Bradley at mancity is a deadly striker also….use to play with him alot when we were younger….
